Boiler Models That Are Eligible for a Free Grant
Non-Condensing Gas Boilers
If your boiler operates without a condensate pipe, then it is likely to be non-condensing and 15-20 years old. ECO4 singles out these models specifically for full replacement because their single heat exchanger enables valuable heat to escape up the flue. Savings of more than £550 per year can be achieved once an A-rated condensing unit is fitted.
Back Boilers
There are thousands of homes which still utilize back boilers installed in the 1960s-80s. They are unmanageable, hard to work on, and popular for low efficiency. The new grant scheme pays 100% to have the unit removed, the chimney capped, and replaced with a new wall-hung boiler or heat pump.
Condensing Boilers Below 86% Efficiency
Some first-generation condensing boilers are still costing too much on energy bills because their efficiency is less than the 86% threshold set by Ofgem. If yours is one of those earlier versions, or constantly breakdowns, then the grant will still cover the cost of a new A-rated substitute.
No Boiler Houses with Electric Heaters
ECO4 also funds new central-heating installations where homes are powered by electric storage heaters or panel convectors. Pipework, radiators, and a high-efficiency combi gas boiler are all fitted for free.
What’s not covered?

Where pipework in older homes makes a combi impractical, a high-efficiency regular boiler is simply linked up with existing cylinders and tanks. You achieve condensing performance without a complete hydraulic overhaul.
